Ride by Night is a queer Star Trek fan webcomic about two trans women who run the night shift on the USS Sally Ride as it explores previously unreachable territory on the far side of Cardassian space.
New pages post weekly, on Sunday mornings. (At least, they will for as long as i can keep up with that schedule.)
Ride by Night is created, written, and illustrated by Esme Moon.
Very special thanks go to Alie Kratzer, Samantha Richardson, and Nikki Darling for letting me bombard them with in-progress artwork while begging them for feedback.
Questions and Answers
Q: When does this story take place?
A: In Chapter One, the year is 2416, placing it 15 years after the Battle of Frontier Day (the PIC finale).
Q: Is Ezmi (the character) based on Esme (the artist)?
A: Yes! I came up with the name Ezmi Idaris—which i claim (without evidence) is the Trill equivalent of Esme Moon—while cosplaying as a Trill, and the character developed from there. I considered changing her name for the comic, but trying to pretend she wasn’t a self-insert felt less honest. Besides, this is fanfic and “me, but prettier and cooler” wish fulfillment is a pretty standard fanfic trope.
Q: Is that a Luna-class starship? A Luna-class with that name and registry number doesn’t make any sense, and it probably would have been decomissioned by the year 2416 in any case.
A: I’m very aware of all of this. But because of who i am, i really wanted it to be a Luna-class. Plus when i came up NCC-83618 as the registry number for the USS Sally Ride, it was so good i couldn’t get rid of it. There’s definitely an in-universe reason for all this, i just haven’t invented it yet.
